Athens Urges Restraint After Israel Intercepts Gaza-Bound Humanitarian Aid Flotilla

Greece on Thursday called for restraint and respect for international law after Israeli forces intercepted the humanitarian aid vessel Sumud in international waters as it attempted to reach the besieged Gaza Strip, marking the latest in a series of Israeli operations against civilian flotillas seeking to break the maritime blockade on the enclave.
The Greek foreign ministry, in a statement issued from Athens, urged all parties to exercise calm and to abide by their obligations under international maritime and humanitarian law, signalling growing European unease with Israel's interdiction of aid convoys. Athens stopped short of formally condemning the operation but said the safety of those aboard, including Greek nationals among the activists and crew, was a matter of immediate diplomatic concern.
The Sumud, whose name means "steadfastness" in Arabic, was carrying medical supplies, food and a contingent of international solidarity activists when it was boarded by Israeli naval commandos, according to organisers of the Global Sumud Flotilla coalition. Communications with the vessel were severed shortly after the interception, with passengers later reported to have been transferred to the Israeli port of Ashdod for processing and likely deportation.
Israeli authorities have repeatedly defended such operations as enforcement of a long-standing naval blockade imposed on Gaza, which Israel argues is necessary to prevent weapons smuggling. Human rights organisations, however, describe the blockade as collective punishment of more than two million Palestinians and have intensified calls for its lifting amid a deepening humanitarian catastrophe in the territory.
The interception comes as international pressure mounts on Israel over the conduct of its military campaign in Gaza, where famine conditions have been documented across the strip and aid agencies warn that overland deliveries remain grossly insufficient. United Nations agencies have repeatedly demanded unhindered humanitarian access through all available corridors, including by sea.
The State of Qatar, which has played a central mediating role alongside Egypt and the United States in successive rounds of ceasefire and hostage negotiations, has consistently denounced Israeli measures that obstruct humanitarian relief to Gaza. Doha has also funded major aid pipelines into the strip and has used its diplomatic platforms, including the United Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council, to press for the protection of civilian convoys and aid workers.
Gulf states more broadly have voiced solidarity with civilian flotilla initiatives, framing them as legitimate expressions of international civil society in the absence of guaranteed humanitarian corridors. Analysts in Doha noted that repeated interceptions of unarmed aid ships in international waters risk further isolating Israel diplomatically and could accelerate calls within Europe for concrete measures, including reviews of trade and association agreements.
The Sumud's passengers and crew had not been formally charged at the time of writing, and several governments were said to be coordinating consular assistance.
