Israeli Police Deny Entry to Latin Patriarch for Palm Sunday Mass at Holy Sepulchre

Israeli police on Saturday blocked Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass, in a move that drew swift international condemnation and renewed concerns over the erosion of religious freedoms in occupied East Jerusalem.

Witnesses and church officials said Israeli forces stationed at checkpoints near the Old City refused to allow the patriarch and members of his entourage to proceed to the ancient basilica, which Christians revere as the site of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The incident disrupted one of the most significant liturgical observances in the Christian calendar, marking the beginning of Holy Week.

Palm Sunday traditionally draws thousands of pilgrims and worshippers to Jerusalem, with processions winding from the Mount of Olives through the narrow streets of the Old City to the Holy Sepulchre. This year, however, Israeli authorities imposed severe restrictions on movement in and around the Old City, citing security considerations amid the ongoing military operations in Gaza.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem issued a statement condemning the denial of access, calling it a flagrant violation of the status quo agreements that have governed access to holy sites for centuries. Church leaders from multiple denominations echoed the condemnation, warning that the incident represented a dangerous escalation in Israeli interference with Christian worship in the Holy Land.

The blocking of the patriarch is the latest in a series of restrictions that have severely curtailed religious life in Jerusalem since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023. Christian communities have reported repeated harassment at checkpoints, denial of worship permits, and a dramatic decline in pilgrim access to sacred sites. Muslim worshippers have faced similar restrictions at Al-Aqsa Mosque, particularly during Ramadan.

Qatar has been among the most vocal Gulf states in denouncing Israeli violations of religious freedoms in Jerusalem. Doha has repeatedly called on the international community to uphold the legal protections afforded to holy sites under international law and the historic status quo arrangements. The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs has consistently emphasized that freedom of worship for all faiths in Jerusalem is a non-negotiable principle that must be defended.

The European Union and the Vatican have previously expressed concern over restrictions on Christian communities in the Holy Land, and Saturday's incident is expected to intensify diplomatic pressure on Israel at a time when its conduct in the occupied territories faces growing scrutiny at the International Court of Justice.

Israeli police did not immediately provide an official explanation for the denial of access to the patriarch. The incident comes as tensions in Jerusalem remain at their highest levels in decades, with Palestinian residents and religious communities bearing the brunt of an ever-tightening security apparatus that critics say is designed to alter the demographic and spiritual character of the city.
