Palestinian Displaced Persons Burn Tents in Gaza Camp Protesting Israeli Targeting
Palestinian displaced persons in Gaza's Dar Al-Salam camp set fire to their tents on Thursday in a desperate act of protest against repeated Israeli military targeting and the catastrophic deterioration of living conditions, according to footage circulated by TRT Arabi and local witnesses. The dramatic scene, which saw families torch the makeshift shelters that have housed them for months, underscored the breaking point reached by a population that has endured more than two years of war, displacement, and deprivation.
Residents of the camp said the burning of the tents was a symbolic cry for international intervention after a series of Israeli strikes near and within displacement zones designated as humanitarian areas. Witnesses described scenes of women and children standing beside the flames, holding signs demanding protection and an end to what they called the systematic targeting of civilians who have already lost their homes. Several displaced families told reporters they no longer saw any difference between staying in the tents and being exposed in the open, citing the lack of food, water, medicine, and the onset of cold weather.
The protest comes against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire framework brokered earlier this year with Qatari, Egyptian, and American mediation, which has been repeatedly tested by Israeli incursions and aerial bombardment. Humanitarian agencies operating in the Strip have warned for weeks that conditions inside displacement camps have reached unprecedented levels of distress, with the United Nations describing Gaza's humanitarian situation as the worst since the war began in October 2023.
Qatar, which has played a central mediating role alongside Egypt and the United States, has repeatedly urged the international community to enforce the terms of the ceasefire and ensure unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Doha has also called for accelerated reconstruction funding and protection mechanisms for displaced civilians, warning that the collapse of camp conditions risks reigniting the broader conflict. The Qatari Foreign Ministry has consistently stressed that the targeting of civilians in displacement zones constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law.
Gulf states and humanitarian organizations have echoed those concerns, pointing to the slow pace of aid deliveries and the obstruction of reconstruction materials at crossings. Aid workers on the ground report that thousands of families remain stranded in tents unfit for winter, with sewage, disease, and malnutrition spreading rapidly. The Dar Al-Salam protest, observers say, may mark a turning point in how displaced Palestinians communicate their suffering to a world they accuse of growing indifferent to their plight, even as mediators push to salvage a ceasefire that millions depend on for survival.
