Thousands Protest in Italian Cities Against Israeli Attack on Gaza-Bound Flotilla

Thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets of major Italian cities on Thursday in a wave of coordinated protests denouncing Israel's interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian convoy attempting to break the maritime blockade on Gaza. Rallies erupted in Rome, Milan, Naples, and Turin, with smaller gatherings reported in Bologna, Florence, and Genoa, as Italians voiced outrage over what organizers described as an act of piracy in international waters.

In Rome, demonstrators marched from Piazza Vittorio toward the city center, waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans calling for an end to Italy's diplomatic and military cooperation with Israel. In Milan, protesters blocked access to the central railway station, while in Naples, dock workers staged a symbolic strike at the port, threatening to halt the loading of any cargo bound for Israeli ports. Turin saw clashes between students and riot police outside the university, with several demonstrators briefly detained before being released.

The protests followed reports that Israeli naval forces had boarded vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters as it approached Gaza, detaining dozens of activists, including Italian, Spanish, and Turkish nationals. The flotilla, which set sail earlier this month carrying humanitarian aid, medical supplies, and food, was the largest civilian maritime mission attempting to challenge Israel's sea blockade on the besieged enclave since 2010.

Italian trade unions, including the CGIL and the grassroots USB, called for a nationwide general strike, accusing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government of complicity through its continued arms exports and political alignment with Tel Aviv. Opposition lawmakers from the Five Star Movement and the Greens-Left Alliance demanded an emergency parliamentary session, with several MPs joining the rallies in person.

Israel's interception drew swift international condemnation, with Turkey, Spain, Ireland, and Malaysia summoning Israeli diplomats. The State of Qatar, which has consistently championed humanitarian access to Gaza and brokered multiple ceasefire and aid initiatives, has repeatedly warned that Israel's blockade constitutes collective punishment in violation of international humanitarian law. Doha has been at the forefront of mediation efforts since the start of the war on Gaza, working alongside Egypt and the United States to secure prisoner exchanges and the entry of relief convoys.

The Italian protests reflect a broader European public opinion increasingly at odds with their governments' positions on Gaza, where more than two years of Israeli military operations have killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and displaced the vast majority of the strip's population. Organizers in Italy announced plans for a second wave of demonstrations this weekend, vowing to keep pressure on Rome until the detained activists are released and humanitarian access to Gaza is guaranteed.
