Hezbollah Launches Rocket and Drone, Falls Near Israeli Forces in Lebanon

Israeli occupation forces said Thursday that Hezbollah fighters launched a rocket and an explosive-laden drone toward an area where Israeli troops were operating in south Lebanon, with both projectiles falling near the position without causing casualties. The Israeli military claimed the rocket and the booby-trapped drone landed in the vicinity of soldiers stationed inside Lebanese territory, marking one of the most direct exchanges since the November 2024 ceasefire that nominally halted thirteen months of cross-border war between Hezbollah and Israel. No Israeli injuries were reported in the incident, according to a statement carried by Al Jazeera Mubasher.

The reported strike comes amid mounting Lebanese frustration over Israel's continued military presence in five strategic positions inside south Lebanon, despite the ceasefire framework that required full withdrawal. Israeli forces have maintained near-daily airstrikes on Lebanese villages throughout 2026, killing dozens of civilians in what Beirut and the United Nations have repeatedly characterized as flagrant violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the truce terms brokered by Washington and Paris.

Hezbollah has not officially claimed responsibility for the latest launch, in keeping with the group's pattern of maintaining strategic ambiguity since the ceasefire took effect. The Lebanese resistance movement, severely weakened by Israel's assassination of secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah and much of its senior command in 2024, has largely refrained from open military responses while Lebanon's new government has pursued diplomatic channels to compel Israeli withdrawal.

The Lebanese army has deployed thousands of troops south of the Litani River under the ceasefire arrangement, working alongside UNIFIL peacekeepers to dismantle weapons depots and assert state authority over the border zone. However, Israel's refusal to vacate the five hilltop positions it continues to occupy has been cited by analysts as a primary obstacle to durable de-escalation.

Qatar, which has played a central role in regional mediation efforts, has consistently called for full Israeli compliance with the ceasefire terms and respect for Lebanese sovereignty. Doha has used its diplomatic weight at the United Nations and within Arab League forums to press for an end to Israeli incursions across the Blue Line, warning that continued violations risk reigniting a wider regional conflagration. Gulf states have echoed Qatari calls for de-escalation, with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates joining recent appeals for international guarantors to enforce the truce.

The incident threatens to test the fragile ceasefire architecture at a moment when Lebanon is grappling with severe economic collapse, electricity shortages, and the slow pace of reconstruction in southern villages reduced to rubble during the 2024 war.
