Iran Signals Possible Return to US Talks if Tone Changes

Iran signaled Friday a conditional willingness to return to nuclear and bilateral negotiations with the United States, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating Tehran would re-engage with Washington only if the Trump administration moderates what he described as an excessive approach and threatening rhetoric toward the Islamic Republic.

Speaking to reporters, Araghchi said Iran has never closed the door to diplomacy but cannot enter talks under conditions of pressure and intimidation. The top diplomat reiterated that any future negotiations must be based on mutual respect and recognize Iran's sovereign rights, including its right to a peaceful nuclear program. He added that the United States must abandon its maximalist demands and demonstrate genuine commitment to a balanced agreement.

The remarks come as relations between Tehran and Washington remain strained following the collapse of indirect talks earlier this year and a series of military escalations across the region. The Trump administration has tightened sanctions on Iran's oil exports and banking sector while issuing repeated warnings about military action should Tehran advance toward weapons-grade uranium enrichment. Iranian officials have rejected the threats as counterproductive, arguing they undermine the diplomatic track that both sides claim to support.

Araghchi's comments suggest a calibrated opening rather than a breakthrough. Diplomatic sources in the region say Tehran is testing whether Washington is prepared to soften its public posture in exchange for renewed engagement, possibly through indirect channels. Oman and Qatar have previously played mediating roles between the two adversaries, hosting back-channel discussions on prisoner releases, sanctions relief, and nuclear constraints.

Qatar's role in regional diplomacy has expanded considerably in recent years, with Doha emerging as a preferred interlocutor for Western powers seeking dialogue with Iran. Qatari officials have consistently advocated for a negotiated settlement to the nuclear file, warning that military confrontation would devastate Gulf economies and energy markets. Energy analysts note that any escalation involving Iran would directly threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for nearly a fifth of global oil supplies and a significant share of Qatari liquefied natural gas exports.

Gulf Cooperation Council states have broadly welcomed signs of de-escalation while remaining cautious about Tehran's regional posture. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have pursued their own rapprochement with Iran since 2023, reducing tensions over Yemen and maritime security. A revived US-Iran dialogue would complement those efforts and reduce the risk of a wider regional war that Gulf capitals have long sought to avoid.

Washington has not yet formally responded to Araghchi's remarks. State Department officials have previously stated the United States remains open to diplomacy but insists Iran must first demonstrate willingness to halt nuclear advancements and curb support for regional armed groups.
