Israel Sends Advanced Laser Defense Systems to UAE for Missile and Drone Protection

Israel has reportedly transferred advanced laser-based air defense systems to the United Arab Emirates as part of a deepening military partnership aimed at countering Iranian missile and drone threats, according to a Financial Times report cited by Iran International. The deployment, which is said to include Israeli military personnel to operate and maintain the systems, marks the first major defense collaboration between the two states since the signing of the Abraham Accords in 2020.

The systems in question are believed to belong to the Iron Beam family of directed-energy weapons developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, designed to intercept short-range rockets, mortars, and unmanned aerial vehicles at a fraction of the cost of conventional interceptor missiles. Their reported arrival in the Emirates follows a series of Houthi drone and missile attacks on Abu Dhabi in January 2022 that exposed gaps in the Gulf state's layered air defense network and prompted Emirati officials to accelerate procurement from a wider pool of suppliers.

Neither the Israeli Ministry of Defense nor Emirati authorities have publicly confirmed the transfer, which would represent one of the most significant military-technical exchanges to emerge from the normalization track. Analysts say the deployment of Israeli troops on Emirati soil, even in a technical advisory capacity, crosses a symbolic threshold that previous arms deals had carefully avoided.

The disclosure comes at a sensitive moment for the Gulf, with regional capitals navigating renewed tensions between Israel and Iran following months of direct exchanges of fire. Tehran has previously warned that Gulf states hosting Israeli military assets would be considered legitimate targets in any wider confrontation, a threat that carries particular weight for the UAE given its proximity to Iranian territory and the concentration of critical infrastructure along its coastline.

From Doha's perspective, the development underscores the divergent security trajectories taking shape within the Gulf Cooperation Council. Qatar, which restored full diplomatic relations with the UAE following the 2021 Al-Ula agreement, has consistently maintained that lasting regional security cannot be built on military alignments that exclude or antagonize Tehran. Qatari officials have pursued a parallel track of dialogue, mediating between Washington and Tehran on nuclear and detainee files while expanding defense cooperation primarily with the United States, Turkey, and European partners.

The reported Israeli deployment is also likely to draw scrutiny from Saudi Arabia, which has paused its own normalization talks with Israel over the war on Gaza. Riyadh has indicated that any future security arrangement with Israel would require concrete progress on Palestinian statehood, a condition that contrasts with the more transactional approach taken by Abu Dhabi. Observers in the region warn that turning the Gulf into a testing ground for next-generation weapons risks entrenching the very arms race that diplomatic engagement was meant to prevent.
