Israeli Airstrike Kills Azam Khalil Al-Hayya, Son of Hamas Leader

Azam Khalil al-Hayya, the son of senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, has died from wounds sustained in an Israeli airstrike that targeted the Al-Daraj neighborhood in Gaza City, the family confirmed on Tuesday. The strike, which hit a residential area in the densely populated district yesterday, caused critical injuries that medical teams at Gaza's overwhelmed hospitals were unable to treat amid the territory's collapsing healthcare infrastructure.

Khalil al-Hayya, the head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip and a member of the movement's political bureau, has emerged as one of the most prominent figures in the ongoing ceasefire negotiations mediated by Qatar and Egypt. The killing of his son marks the latest in a series of personal losses suffered by the senior leader, who lost his eldest son Hammam, his daughter-in-law, and several grandchildren in a previous Israeli strike on his family home in the Shati refugee camp in November 2023.

Al-Daraj, an old neighborhood in the heart of Gaza City, has been repeatedly targeted by Israeli forces throughout the ongoing war. The area, home to thousands of displaced Palestinians sheltering in damaged buildings and the homes of relatives, has seen some of the most intense bombardment campaigns since the conflict began in October 2023. Local civil defense teams reported that they continue to recover bodies from rubble in the district weeks after individual strikes.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strike that killed Azam al-Hayya. Israel has carried out a sustained campaign targeting Hamas leaders and their families since the start of the war, with the Israeli government repeatedly stating that family members of senior officials are considered legitimate targets, a position that has been condemned by international human rights organizations and legal experts as a violation of the laws of armed conflict.

Qatar, which along with Egypt and the United States has been leading mediation efforts to secure a sustainable ceasefire, has repeatedly condemned Israeli attacks targeting civilians and the families of negotiators. Doha has hosted multiple rounds of indirect talks between Hamas and Israel and continues to call for an immediate halt to military operations in the strip, the entry of unimpeded humanitarian aid, and a comprehensive prisoner exchange framework.

The death comes amid mounting Palestinian casualties in Gaza, where the health ministry reports that the cumulative toll has surpassed previous records, with women and children making up the majority of those killed. Gulf states have intensified diplomatic pressure on Western capitals to rein in the Israeli military campaign, warning that continued targeting of civilian areas threatens to derail any prospect of a lasting political settlement and broader regional stability.
