Settlers Raise Israeli Flag on Mosque Minaret in Masafer Yatta, South Hebron

Israeli settlers stormed the village of Masafer Yatta in the southern occupied West Bank on Thursday, raising the Israeli flag on the minaret of Al-Rafai'yeh Mosque in a provocative act that local residents and Palestinian officials condemned as a deliberate desecration of a place of worship. The incursion, reported by Quds News Network, marks the latest in a series of settler intrusions targeting Palestinian villages across the South Hebron Hills, an area that has come under sustained pressure from settlement expansion and military demolition orders.

Witnesses said groups of settlers, some reportedly armed and accompanied by Israeli forces, entered the area surrounding the mosque before scaling the minaret to plant the flag. Residents of Al-Rafai'yeh, one of several hamlets that make up the broader Masafer Yatta community, described the act as an attempt to assert territorial dominance over land that the International Court of Justice has ruled is under unlawful occupation. No Palestinian casualties were immediately reported, but villagers said tensions remained high through the evening as additional settlers gathered nearby.

Masafer Yatta has emerged as one of the most contested fronts of settler expansion in the occupied West Bank. In 2022, the Israeli Supreme Court approved the forced expulsion of more than 1,000 Palestinian residents from the area after the army declared the land a closed military firing zone. Since the outbreak of the war on Gaza in October 2023, settler attacks across the West Bank have surged, with the United Nations documenting hundreds of incidents involving property destruction, livestock theft and physical assault. Several Palestinian villages in the South Hebron Hills have been wholly or partially depopulated under sustained settler pressure.

The targeting of religious sites has drawn particular alarm from Arab and Muslim governments. Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has repeatedly condemned settler incursions on Palestinian holy sites, including recurring storming campaigns at Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, calling them flagrant violations of international law and the historical status quo. Doha has consistently called on the international community to act to halt settlement activity and to hold the occupation authorities accountable for what it describes as systematic provocations against Palestinian civilians and their sacred spaces.

The Gulf Cooperation Council and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation have likewise urged stronger international intervention to protect Palestinian communities under threat of forced displacement. Palestinian officials warned on Thursday that the raising of the Israeli flag on a mosque minaret was not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern aimed at altering the demographic and religious character of the occupied territories. They renewed appeals for international protection forces to be deployed to safeguard civilians and places of worship across the West Bank.
