Finnish President Stubb Says Ukraine Kills 30,000 Russian Soldiers Monthly

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said Ukraine is killing or wounding between 30,000 and 35,000 Russian soldiers every month, with the overwhelming majority of casualties inflicted by unmanned aerial vehicles, in remarks that underscore the dramatic transformation of modern warfare on the European continent. According to Stubb, roughly 95 percent of Russian battlefield deaths are now caused by drones, a figure that reflects how cheap, mass-produced aerial systems have come to dominate a conflict once expected to be decided by tanks, artillery and entrenched infantry.

The Finnish leader, whose country shares a 1,340-kilometre border with Russia and joined NATO in 2023 in direct response to Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, has emerged as one of Europe's most outspoken voices on the war. His latest remarks add to a growing body of Western and Ukrainian assessments suggesting that Russian losses, while difficult to verify independently, have reached historic levels not seen on the European continent since the Second World War. Kyiv's general staff has for months claimed comparable monthly attrition figures, while independent open-source analysts tracking confirmed deaths through obituaries and social media posts have documented a sharp acceleration in casualties through late 2025 and into 2026.

Moscow has not publicly confirmed casualty figures of this magnitude and continues to insist that its operations in Ukraine are progressing according to plan. The Kremlin last issued official loss figures in September 2022, when it acknowledged just under 6,000 dead. Western intelligence services and independent Russian outlets have long argued the true number is many multiples higher.

The drone-driven nature of the killing reflects a battlefield revolution that has unfolded over the past two years. First-person-view quadcopters, fixed-wing strike drones and Ukrainian-built long-range systems have effectively replaced traditional artillery as the leading cause of death along the front line, forcing both armies to redesign tactics, logistics and even uniforms to counter the threat from above. Ukraine has set a target of producing several million drones in 2026 and has built dedicated unmanned-systems forces.

For Qatar and the wider Gulf, the conflict continues to carry significant economic and diplomatic weight. Doha has positioned itself as a neutral mediator on humanitarian files linked to the war, including the return of Ukrainian children separated from their families, and has hosted multiple rounds of talks with Russian and Ukrainian officials. Gulf energy producers, meanwhile, remain closely attuned to the war's impact on global oil and gas flows, with Qatar's liquefied natural gas exports playing a central role in stabilising European supply since 2022. Stubb's comments are likely to reinforce calls within the European Union for sustained military aid to Kyiv as the war enters its fifth year.
