Iranian forces launched drone strikes on camps belonging to the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) in the Erbil governorate of Iraqi Kurdistan, according to reports circulating from regional monitoring channels. The cross-border strikes mark the latest escalation in Tehran's long-running campaign against Iranian Kurdish opposition groups operating from bases inside northern Iraq, and have drawn immediate concern from Iraqi authorities in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government in Erbil.

Initial reports indicated that several drones targeted PDKI positions, with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps having previously claimed responsibility for similar operations against what it describes as armed separatist groups threatening Iranian territorial integrity. The PDKI, founded in 1945, has maintained a presence in Iraqi Kurdistan for decades and has been a recurring target of Iranian missile and drone campaigns, particularly since the protests that swept Iran in late 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.

The Iraqi federal government has consistently condemned such strikes as violations of its sovereignty, while Tehran maintains that Baghdad has failed to disarm or expel the groups under a 2023 security agreement signed between the two countries. That accord required Iraqi authorities to relocate Iranian Kurdish armed factions away from the border and dismantle their military infrastructure, a process that has proceeded slowly and unevenly according to Iranian officials.

The Kurdistan Regional Government, headquartered in Erbil, has previously called for de-escalation and warned that repeated cross-border attacks endanger civilians and undermine regional stability. Local hospitals and emergency services in the affected areas were placed on alert, though casualty figures had not been independently verified at the time of reporting.

The strikes come amid heightened regional tensions, with Iran navigating multiple fronts including its support networks in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iraq, alongside ongoing nuclear file negotiations and economic pressure from Western sanctions. Analysts note that Tehran has historically used cross-border operations against Kurdish groups as both a security measure and a signal of resolve to domestic and regional audiences.

For Qatar and the wider Gulf, the development carries direct implications. Doha has positioned itself as a mediator in regional disputes and has consistently advocated dialogue over confrontation, including in its diplomatic engagement with Tehran. Qatari officials have repeatedly stressed that escalation between Iran and its neighbours undermines collective Gulf security and complicates broader efforts to stabilise Iraq, a country in which Doha has significant diplomatic and reconstruction interests. Gulf Cooperation Council members are likely to monitor the situation closely, particularly given the spillover risks for energy corridors and the wider security architecture of the region. Calls for restraint and a return to dialogue are expected to feature prominently in coming statements.
