Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz 2026: Oil Price Surge and Qatar LNG Disruption

Iran has enforced a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, barring dozens of commercial vessels from transiting the critical waterway in a dramatic escalation that sent global oil markets into turmoil and raised fears of a wider regional conflict. Iranian naval and Revolutionary Guard forces began intercepting and turning back tankers and cargo ships in the narrow passage Monday, according to multiple maritime monitoring sources, citing retaliatory measures against recent U.S. and Israeli military actions targeting Iranian territory and assets.

The Strait of Hormuz, a 33-kilometre-wide chokepoint between Iran and Oman, is the world's most strategically vital maritime corridor. Roughly 20 percent of global oil supply and nearly a third of the world's liquefied natural gas passes through its waters daily, making any disruption immediately felt across global energy markets. Brent crude surged past $110 per barrel within hours of the first confirmed reports, while LNG spot prices in Asia and Europe spiked sharply.

For Qatar, the implications are immediate and severe. The country exports more LNG than any other nation on earth, and the overwhelming majority of its tanker traffic transits the Strait of Hormuz before reaching buyers in Asia, Europe, and beyond. QatarEnergy, the state energy company, has not yet issued a public statement, though industry sources indicate the company is monitoring developments closely and consulting with international partners on alternative routing options.

The Gulf Cooperation Council called an emergency consultative session, with member states expressing alarm at the potential economic fallout. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait — all of whose oil exports rely on Hormuz transit — face parallel exposure. Saudi Arabia has historically used the East-West Pipeline to bypass the strait, though that route has limited capacity and cannot absorb the full volume of blocked shipments.

The United States Fifth Fleet, headquartered in Bahrain, confirmed it is conducting freedom-of-navigation operations in the Gulf and has deployed additional assets to the region. Washington has described the blockade as a flagrant violation of international maritime law and warned of consequences if Iranian forces do not stand down. Israel has not commented publicly.

Diplomatic channels were reported active Monday evening, with Omani and Qatari intermediaries said to be engaged in back-channel contacts aimed at de-escalating the standoff before it triggers a broader military confrontation. Qatar has historically played a mediating role in Gulf tensions and maintains open lines of communication with Tehran.
