Israeli Army Kills Two Hezbollah Members Near Lebanese Border

Israeli occupation forces claimed on Wednesday they killed two Hezbollah fighters who crossed the Blue Line into territory under their control in southern Lebanon, in the latest incident testing the fragile ceasefire that has held since November 2024.
The Israeli military said the two men were armed and had infiltrated a restricted zone along the United Nations-demarcated ceasefire boundary, which runs along Lebanon's southern frontier under UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Forces opened fire after the alleged crossing was detected, the Israeli army said in a statement.
The incident comes as the truce brokered through American and French mediation — monitored by the Lebanese Armed Forces and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon — remains under persistent strain. Violations along the Blue Line have been recorded by both sides since the ceasefire paused more than five months of devastating Israeli operations that killed thousands of Lebanese civilians and levelled large parts of southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Hezbollah did not immediately confirm or deny the deaths, a pattern typical of the group following sensitive incidents along the line of contact. The Lebanese government, which has been working to assert sovereign control over the south under the terms of the ceasefire, had not issued a formal response at the time of publication.
The incident drew close attention in Gulf diplomatic circles, where Qatar has been among the most active Arab mediators in Lebanon's post-war stabilisation. Doha has maintained open channels with Lebanese officials and international partners throughout the ceasefire period, consistently pressing for full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanese villages still under occupation — a requirement Israel has been slow to fulfil.
Qatar's foreign ministry has repeatedly called on Israel to honour the terms of the November agreement, warning that continued military presence in Lebanese territory constitutes a violation of Resolution 1701 and undermines the prospects for durable peace. Doha has also urged all parties to refrain from actions that could reignite hostilities.
The United Nations has warned that any escalation risks unravelling the ceasefire entirely. UNIFIL, which has itself faced tensions with Israeli forces in recent months, continues to patrol the Blue Line corridor in an effort to prevent further confrontations.
Regional analysts note that while the ceasefire has broadly held, the steady accumulation of cross-border incidents — including Israeli overflights, reported infiltrations, and sporadic gunfire — is eroding confidence in the agreement's durability and complicating Lebanon's already precarious political and economic recovery.
