Kuwait International Airport Reports Multiple Drone Attacks Causing Radar Damage

Kuwait's civil aviation authority confirmed on Friday that Kuwait International Airport was targeted by multiple drone attacks, resulting in significant damage to radar systems and temporary disruptions to air traffic operations. The attacks mark a serious escalation in regional tensions and have raised alarm across the Gulf Cooperation Council states.
According to initial reports, several unmanned aerial vehicles struck critical infrastructure at the airport, disabling radar equipment essential for guiding commercial aircraft. Kuwaiti authorities immediately activated emergency protocols, diverting inbound flights to neighboring airports and grounding departures until a full security assessment could be completed.
The Kuwaiti government did not immediately attribute the attacks to a specific actor, though regional analysts noted the trajectory and characteristics of the drones pointed toward Iranian-origin systems. Tehran has not issued an official response to the allegations. The incident comes amid heightened tensions across the Persian Gulf following weeks of military posturing and diplomatic friction between Iran and several Gulf states.
Kuwait's Ministry of Defense said air defense units were placed on the highest level of alert and that an investigation was underway in coordination with allied military partners. The ministry urged calm among the public while acknowledging the severity of the breach.
The GCC secretariat in Riyadh issued a statement condemning the attacks in the strongest terms, calling them a direct threat to the sovereignty of a member state and to civilian aviation safety in the region. The statement called for an immediate international investigation and warned that any further provocations would be met with a unified response.
In Doha, Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed full solidarity with Kuwait, describing the attacks as a dangerous violation of international law and an unacceptable threat to Gulf security. Qatar, which shares close diplomatic and economic ties with Kuwait, has long advocated for dialogue as the primary means of resolving regional disputes but has consistently maintained that the sovereignty of Gulf states is a red line that cannot be crossed.
Hamad International Airport in Doha reported no disruptions to its operations but confirmed that enhanced security measures had been implemented as a precautionary step. Qatar Airways said it was monitoring the situation closely and would adjust flight routes as necessary.
Aviation experts warned that the targeting of civilian airport infrastructure represents a troubling escalation that could have far-reaching consequences for commercial air travel across the Middle East. The International Civil Aviation Organization was expected to issue guidance in the coming hours.
Kuwait International Airport serves as a major hub connecting Gulf states to destinations across Asia, Europe, and Africa, handling tens of millions of passengers annually. Any prolonged disruption to its operations would carry significant economic consequences for the region.
