Malaysia Calls for Release of Detained Activists After Israeli Attack

Malaysia on Monday demanded the immediate release of more than 100 activists detained by Israeli forces following a military raid on the Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla in international waters, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warning that the world must no longer submit to oppression. The Malaysian government summoned diplomatic channels to press for the safe return of its citizens and other international volunteers who were aboard the convoy when Israeli naval commandos intercepted the vessels in the eastern Mediterranean. Anwar said in a statement carried by Anadolu Agency that the assault on unarmed civilians delivering aid to besieged Palestinians constituted a flagrant violation of international law and maritime conventions, adding that silence in the face of such aggression amounted to complicity. The flotilla, which included activists, medics, and parliamentarians from dozens of countries, was carrying food, medical supplies, and symbolic cargo intended to break the more than 17-year Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. Survivors and rights groups reported that Israeli forces boarded the vessels using helicopters and speedboats, detaining passengers and towing the ships toward the port of Ashdod. Malaysian authorities said they had not yet received consular access to their nationals and called on the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene urgently. Anwar, a longtime advocate for the Palestinian cause, urged Muslim-majority and non-aligned nations to coordinate a unified diplomatic response and consider legal action at the International Court of Justice. The Malaysian foreign ministry described the raid as state piracy and reiterated Kuala Lumpur's refusal to recognise Israel, maintaining its position that no normalisation can take place while the occupation of Palestinian territories continues. Qatar, which has played a leading mediating role in successive Gaza ceasefire negotiations alongside Egypt and the United States, has consistently condemned Israeli actions targeting humanitarian missions. Doha has channelled billions of dollars in reconstruction aid to Gaza and continues to host indirect talks aimed at securing a durable truce and prisoner exchange. Gulf states including Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia have echoed calls for accountability, while Türkiye, whose citizens were killed during the 2010 Mavi Marmara raid on a similar flotilla, demanded an independent international investigation. Human rights organisations warned that the latest interception underscores Israel's continued isolation of Gaza's 2.3 million residents, who face acute shortages of food, water, fuel, and medicine after months of devastating war. The fate of the detained activists, and whether they will be deported or charged under Israeli law, remained unclear as governments worldwide intensified pressure for their release.
