Qaani Says Palestinian Resistance Will Liberate Jerusalem

The commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force, Brigadier General Esmail Qaani, declared that the combined resistance fronts in Palestine and Lebanon will ultimately lead to the liberation of Jerusalem, according to a statement carried by Palestinian news outlet Quds News Network. The remarks underscore Tehran's continued framing of the Palestinian cause as a central pillar of its regional doctrine, more than two years into the devastating war on Gaza.

Qaani, who succeeded the late Qassem Soleimani as head of the Quds Force in January 2020, said that the armed factions in Gaza, the West Bank and southern Lebanon represent a unified axis whose perseverance will eventually overturn the status quo over the holy city. He cast the ongoing confrontations as part of a long historical arc, arguing that Israel's military campaigns have failed to break the will of resistance movements despite the immense human and material toll inflicted on civilian populations.

The statement comes at a particularly sensitive moment in the region. Gaza remains under a fragile ceasefire arrangement brokered with Qatari, Egyptian and American mediation, while sporadic exchanges of fire continue along the Lebanese border between Hezbollah and Israeli forces. Jerusalem itself, and in particular the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, has witnessed repeated incursions by Israeli settlers and security forces over recent months, drawing condemnation from Arab and Islamic capitals.

Qatar, which hosts the political office of Hamas and has served as a key mediator throughout successive rounds of indirect negotiations, has consistently warned that the absence of a credible political horizon for Palestinian statehood will continue to fuel instability across the Levant. Doha has reiterated its support for the Arab Peace Initiative and a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Iranian officials have grown more vocal in recent weeks following a series of regional developments, including renewed talks between Tehran and Gulf capitals and the gradual restoration of diplomatic ties across the wider Middle East. Analysts note that Qaani's remarks are aimed at both domestic and regional audiences, reaffirming the Quds Force's strategic posture while signalling continuity in Iran's support for what it terms the Axis of Resistance.

Israeli officials have not formally responded to the latest statement, but the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly described Iran and its regional allies as the principal threat to its security. For Gulf states, including Qatar, the priority remains de-escalation, humanitarian access for Gaza, and a sustained diplomatic track that addresses the underlying drivers of the conflict rather than its symptoms alone.
