Qatar Investment Authority Leads $200 Million Series D for Gatik

Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), the Gulf state's sovereign wealth fund, is leading a $200 million Series D funding round for Gatik, a California-based autonomous trucking company specializing in short-haul, middle-mile delivery. The investment adds Gatik to QIA's expanding portfolio of technology and logistics holdings, part of the fund's strategy to diversify beyond traditional oil and gas assets into sectors including artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and supply-chain infrastructure.
Gatik, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Mountain View, California, develops autonomous box trucks designed for repetitive, fixed routes between distribution centers, warehouses, and retail stores rather than long-haul highway routes. The company has built commercial partnerships with major US retailers, including Walmart, Kroger, and Tyson Foods, deploying its self-driving delivery trucks — engineered in partnership with truck manufacturer Isuzu — across multiple US markets. Unlike passenger robotaxi ventures, Gatik has focused on the middle-mile logistics segment, arguing that the predictability of fixed commercial routes makes autonomous operation commercially viable sooner than for general road traffic.
For QIA, the deal continues a pattern of participation in late-stage funding rounds for high-growth technology companies in the United States, an area the fund has prioritized as it manages assets exceeding $500 billion. Doha has increasingly directed capital toward artificial intelligence, autonomous mobility, and logistics technology as part of Qatar National Vision 2030's push to build a knowledge-based economy less dependent on hydrocarbon revenue.
The Gatik investment underscores Qatar's ambition to position itself as a significant institutional investor in the technologies reshaping global freight and retail logistics, sectors expected to see substantial growth as companies increasingly turn to automation to address labor shortages and rising delivery costs.
