UN Economic Council Honors Late Sheikh Hamad's Legacy of Qatar Modernization

The United Nations Economic and Social Council held a commemorative session on September 10, 2026, honoring the late Father Amir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, whose leadership transformed Qatar into a modern regional power and trusted diplomatic mediator. The establishment of Qatar Foundation and Education City revolutionized human capital development, while Qatar National Vision 2030 set comprehensive targets for sustainable economic and social progress. These initiatives expanded Qatar's global economic share substantially and positioned the nation as a hub for innovation and education in the Middle East.

Diplomatically, Sheikh Hamad earned international recognition for mediation prowess. His administration facilitated the Doha Agreement among Lebanese political parties, negotiated the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur in 2006, and mediated disputes between Djibouti and Eritrea. Qatar emerged as a trusted partner for regional and international peace efforts, particularly regarding Palestinian reconciliation initiatives. Secretary-General Guterres stated during the session: "Under Sheikh Hamad's leadership, Qatar developed into a trusted partner in mediation and diplomacy."

Social progress accompanied economic growth. Women's political participation expanded significantly—women gained voting rights and the ability to run as electoral candidates, reflecting Sheikh Hamad's commitment to human development. Heavy investment in education and youth development programs positioned Qatari youth as future leaders capable of stewarding the nation's aspirations.

Sheikha Alya told the council: "With the passing of His Highness the Father Amir, the State of Qatar has lost an exemplary leader who transformed Qatar."
