UN Secretary-General Alarmed by Violence in Mogadishu, Urges Dialogue
The United Nations Secretary-General has expressed alarm at reports of violence in Mogadishu, calling on all stakeholders in Somalia to resume political dialogue and exercise utmost restraint to avoid reversing the nation's progress.
In a statement on June 4, the UN chief underscored the urgent need for all parties to return to talks, emphasizing that continued violence threatens both civilian protection and the stability gains Somalia has achieved. He warned that political differences must be resolved through dialogue rather than confrontation.
The call comes as the UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) disclosed that it and international partners had repeatedly warned of the risk of repeating the 2021 electoral crisis. That period was marked by disputes over the electoral roadmap that destabilized the country. Despite these warnings, the organization noted, the precautions were not heeded.
The latest escalation follows the suspension of high-level talks on May 15. UNTMIS has urged all Somali leaders to prioritize the national interest of the Somali people and resume negotiations that could de-escalate tensions. International partners remain positioned to facilitate dialogue and support reconciliation efforts.
The UN's intervention reflects deep concern within the international community over Somalia's fragile political stability. The 2021 crisis demonstrated the rapid deterioration that can occur when electoral disputes are allowed to escalate without dialogue. The current situation echoes those tensions, prompting the UN to sound an alarm before the situation deteriorates further.
The Secretary-General's statement represents a strong diplomatic signal to all Somali political actors that the international community is watching closely and expects restraint and commitment to dialogue. He called specifically for all parties to refrain from any actions that could incite further violence and to resolve their differences through peaceful negotiation.
The resumption of talks is framed as essential not only for political stability but for protecting Somalia's civilian population and civilian infrastructure. The UN emphasized that continued violence could reverse years of institution-building and stabilization work, setting back the country's development trajectory.
