Hezbollah Drone Strike Damages Israeli Merkava Tank

Hezbollah struck an Israeli Merkava tank with a solar-powered first-person view drone on Sunday, the Lebanese armed group announced, in what it described as part of its ongoing military campaign against Israeli forces along the Lebanese-Israeli frontier.
The strike, reported by military monitoring channels including Clash Report, marks another in a series of drone-based attacks Hezbollah has carried out against Israeli armored units in recent months. The group said the FPV drone, guided by a remote operator, scored a direct hit on the Merkava — one of Israel's most advanced main battle tanks — causing visible damage to the vehicle.
Israeli military officials had not publicly confirmed the incident at the time of publication. The Israel Defense Forces have largely maintained a policy of not commenting on individual equipment losses during active operations along the northern front.
The use of solar-powered drone technology marks a notable development in Hezbollah's capabilities. FPV drones, which have become a defining weapon of modern asymmetric warfare following their widespread adoption in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, offer combatants a low-cost, highly precise means of targeting armored vehicles that were once considered near-invulnerable to non-state actors.
The Lebanese front has remained volatile since a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah nominally took effect in late 2024, with both sides reporting near-daily violations. Hezbollah has continued to claim strikes against Israeli military positions in northern Israel and along the border zone, while Israeli forces have carried out airstrikes and ground operations inside Lebanese territory.
Qatar, which has played an active diplomatic role in mediating between regional parties and was instrumental in brokering previous Gaza ceasefire negotiations, has consistently called for a full Israeli military withdrawal from Lebanese territory in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Doha has urged all parties to honor the terms of the ceasefire and to pursue a political resolution that safeguards Lebanese sovereignty.
The Gulf Cooperation Council has broadly expressed concern over continued escalation along the Lebanese border, warning that sustained military activity risks destabilizing the wider Levant region and undermining ongoing diplomatic efforts to reach a durable settlement to the Gaza conflict.
The incident comes as international pressure mounts on Israel over its conduct in both Gaza and Lebanon, with multiple UN bodies and rights organizations documenting what they describe as systematic violations of international humanitarian law. Hezbollah, meanwhile, has framed its continued military activity as a front of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
