Israeli Army Announces Death of Major and Injuries of Nine Soldiers

The Israeli military announced Sunday the death of a major and the wounding of nine soldiers following clashes in southern Lebanon, in the latest sign that hostilities along the volatile border continue despite international calls for a permanent ceasefire.
The Israeli army confirmed the casualties in a brief statement, identifying the fallen officer as a major but withholding further details pending notification of his family. Nine additional soldiers sustained injuries of varying severity during the same engagement, the military said, without specifying the precise location of the clashes or the forces involved.
The announcement comes as ceasefire arrangements brokered by the United States, France and Qatar in late 2024 have struggled to hold along Lebanon's southern frontier. Israeli forces have repeatedly conducted operations inside Lebanese territory beyond the withdrawal deadlines stipulated in the truce agreement, drawing condemnation from Beirut, Paris and Arab capitals including Doha.
Qatar, which played a central role in mediating the Lebanon ceasefire alongside Egyptian and American envoys, has repeatedly urged full Israeli compliance with the terms of the agreement and the complete withdrawal of occupation forces from Lebanese sovereign soil. The Qatari Foreign Ministry has warned that continued Israeli military presence undermines the fragile stability sought by Lebanon's newly formed government.
The clashes underscore the precarious nature of the current situation in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah and Israeli forces have exchanged fire on multiple occasions since the formal cessation of the 2024 war. Lebanese officials have accused Israel of stalling its withdrawal and of conducting airstrikes on Lebanese villages in violation of the ceasefire terms.
The death of the Israeli officer brings renewed attention to the human cost of a conflict that has already claimed thousands of lives, the overwhelming majority of them Lebanese and Palestinian civilians. Rights organisations have documented widespread destruction of Lebanese villages and civilian infrastructure during the Israeli military campaign that preceded the ceasefire.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, has called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to honour their obligations under the ceasefire framework and UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The world body has also called on Israel to accelerate its withdrawal from Lebanese territory it continues to occupy.
Regional observers warned that continued military incidents risk triggering a wider escalation at a moment when Gaza remains under Israeli bombardment and diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting truce across all fronts have yet to produce a durable agreement.
