Palestinians in Gaza have resorted to extracting iron from rubble to survive, as building materials have become scarce due to the ongoing blockade. The situation in Gaza has been dire for nearly nine months since the ceasefire in October, with the enclave still reeling from the effects of Israel's war.

The blockade has denied essential supplies to Gaza, forcing Palestinians to invent new forms of creative reuse. As a result, recycling has become a matter of life and death, with locals finding ways to repurpose rubble for rebuilding. Israel has banned over 1,000 dual-usage construction materials, leaving Palestinians with no choice but to rely on recycled materials. The use of recycled materials is not limited to small-scale projects, as a feasibility study is underway to examine whether Gaza's war debris could be recycled to reclaim coastal land and build artificial islands.

Locals are crushing debris into interlocking blocks to build shelters, using a technique similar to Lego-like bricks. The task of clearing the rubble is daunting, with an estimated 68 million tons of debris scattered throughout the enclave. As the situation continues to unfold, Qatar and the Gulf region may play a crucial role in providing humanitarian aid and support to the affected populations.
