Pope Presides Over Way of the Cross Ceremony at Colosseum
Pope Leo XIV on Friday led the ancient Good Friday ritual of the Way of the Cross at Rome's iconic Colosseum, carrying the wooden cross through the torchlit amphitheater before tens of thousands of the faithful gathered to mark Christianity's most solemn night.
The pontiff, presiding over his first Easter as head of the Roman Catholic Church, led the centuries-old Via Crucis procession, which traces the final hours of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion. The open-air ceremony at the historic Roman amphitheater drew pilgrims and dignitaries from across the globe, with the event broadcast live to hundreds of millions of Catholics worldwide.
Under a clear April sky, candles and torches illuminated the ancient stone walls as the procession moved through fourteen stations representing Christ's path to Calvary. Pope Leo XIV paused at each station for readings and prayer, his voice carrying across the arena in solemn reflection before the assembled crowds.
The Way of the Cross at the Colosseum has been a centerpiece of papal Good Friday observances for decades, symbolizing both the site's early Christian martyrdom history and the universal reach of the Roman Catholic Church. This year's ceremony carried added significance as the world's 1.3 billion Catholics gathered under a new pontiff for the first time in years.
For the Gulf region's sizable Catholic communities, the ceremony carries deep personal resonance. Qatar alone is home to an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 Catholic faithful, predominantly South Asian and Filipino migrant workers, who gathered in parishes across Doha to mark Good Friday. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, one of the country's principal Catholic places of worship, held special commemorative services.
Qatar has long maintained a policy of religious tolerance, permitting the practice of non-Islamic faiths within designated places of worship — a stance that has drawn international praise and reflects Doha's broader positioning as a pluralistic and diplomatically neutral state. The emirate hosts one of the largest concentrations of Catholic faithful on the Arabian Peninsula.
The broader Gulf region, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, is home to millions of expatriate Catholics who followed Pope Leo XIV's first Easter ceremonies via satellite and streaming platforms.
The ceremony concluded with a papal address calling for peace and solidarity — themes that resonate deeply in a region where Qatar has established itself as a leading mediator in international conflicts.
