Qatar Energy Ships First LNG From Texas Golden Pass Terminal 2026

Qatar Energy has shipped the first cargo of liquefied natural gas from the Golden Pass LNG export terminal in Sabine Pass, Texas, marking a landmark milestone in the Gulf state's push to cement its position as the world's dominant LNG supplier and extend its energy footprint deep into North American export infrastructure.

The inaugural cargo represents the culmination of years of investment and construction at the Golden Pass facility, a joint venture in which QatarEnergy holds a 70 percent stake alongside ExxonMobil's 30 percent share. The terminal, situated on the Gulf Coast of southeast Texas, is designed to liquefy domestically produced American natural gas for export to global markets, giving Qatar a direct commercial stake in U.S. energy flows at a time when demand for LNG has surged across Europe and Asia.

The project has been closely watched by the international energy sector following a significant setback last year when Zachry Group, the primary construction contractor, filed for bankruptcy and withdrew from the project. QatarEnergy responded by assuming direct control of construction management, a move that demonstrated the state-owned company's resolve to protect its strategic investments and deliver the terminal on its own terms. The successful dispatch of the first cargo signals that those efforts have paid off.

Golden Pass is projected to have an export capacity of approximately 18 million tonnes of LNG per year once all three processing trains are fully operational, making it one of the largest LNG export facilities in the United States. The terminal adds a significant new volume to global supply at a moment when European nations continue to seek alternatives to Russian pipeline gas and Asian buyers compete for long-term supply contracts.

For Qatar, the milestone deepens an already formidable global LNG presence. QatarEnergy is simultaneously expanding its domestic production capacity through the North Field Expansion project, which will lift Qatar's total LNG output from 77 million tonnes to 142 million tonnes per year by the early 2030s. The Golden Pass export volumes will complement that domestic expansion, positioning Qatar as a supplier capable of moving gas originating from two continents.

Energy analysts have described the Golden Pass shipment as strategically significant not only commercially but geopolitically, reinforcing Qatar's role as a reliable long-term energy partner for Western nations at a time of heightened sensitivity around global supply chains. Qatar has leveraged its LNG position to sustain diplomatic influence well beyond the Gulf region, and the Texas terminal extends that leverage further into the Western hemisphere.
