Qatar pledges all possible support to Bangladesh for energy security

Qatar's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, pledged on August 19, 2026, to extend all possible support to Bangladesh in ensuring its energy security, during high-level talks held in Doha with a visiting Bangladeshi delegation led by Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman. Sheikh Mohammed described Bangladesh as a "brotherly country" and reaffirmed Doha's readiness to stand by Dhaka amid its current energy challenges.

The Bangladeshi delegation also included the prime minister's adviser for finance and planning, Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir; the state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, Aninda Islam Amit; and the prime minister's adviser for foreign affairs, Humayun Kabir. On the Qatari side, Sheikh Mohammed was joined by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sultan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi.

Rahman, who recently assumed the presidency of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, praised Qatar's "constructive and responsible role in promoting peace, security and stability" in the region and beyond. He extended an invitation to Sheikh Mohammed to visit Bangladesh, underscoring Dhaka's intent to deepen bilateral ties.

The pledge builds on an established energy relationship between the two countries. Qatar has been a key supplier of liquefied natural gas to Bangladesh since 2018, when Qatargas, now part of QatarEnergy, signed a 15-year agreement with Bangladesh's Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited to deliver roughly 2.5 million tonnes of LNG annually, helping ease chronic gas shortages that have strained the country's power generation and industrial sectors. Tuesday's talks signal Doha's willingness to expand that cooperation as Bangladesh continues to navigate energy supply pressures.
