Qatar has expressed full support for Oman's diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalating tensions with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, backing proposals that include a joint navigational corridor and mine-clearing operations in the strategic waterway. The endorsement, reported by Muscat Daily, reflects Doha's broader posture of favoring dialogue and mediation over confrontation in Gulf security matters, a stance it has consistently applied toward Tehran even as other regional and Western actors have pushed harder lines. The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of global oil and a significant share of liquefied natural gas shipments pass daily, has long been a flashpoint given Iran's periodic threats to restrict passage during periods of heightened tension with the United States and its allies. Oman, which shares control of the strait's navigational channels with Iran from its Musandam peninsula, has historically served as a discreet interlocutor between Tehran and Western capitals, hosting back-channel talks during past nuclear negotiations and regional crises. The proposed joint navigational corridor would establish agreed shipping lanes to reduce the risk of naval confrontations, while coordinated mine-clearing operations would address the residual threat from mines laid during past conflicts in the Gulf, a concern that has periodically disrupted commercial shipping and insurance rates for tankers transiting the area. Qatar's support for this framework aligns with its own economic stake in Gulf maritime stability, given that its LNG exports, a cornerstone of the national economy, depend heavily on unimpeded passage through Hormuz.
