Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy Vows Retaliation for US Treaty Violations

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy issued a stark warning to the United States on Saturday, declaring that any breach of commitments made during ongoing nuclear negotiations would be met with a proportionate and decisive response, raising tensions across the Persian Gulf as diplomatic talks continue under Omani mediation.
The statement, carried by Iranian state media and amplified through Al Jazeera Mubasher, marks one of the most direct threats from Iran's elite military branch since the latest round of indirect talks between Tehran and Washington resumed in Muscat. IRGC Navy Commander Rear Admiral Ali Reza Tangsiri did not specify which commitments he was referencing, but the warning comes amid reports that negotiations over Iran's nuclear program have stalled over uranium enrichment limits and the sequencing of sanctions relief.
The Gulf region, which serves as a critical corridor for approximately 20 percent of the world's oil trade through the Strait of Hormuz, has watched the US-Iran standoff with mounting anxiety. Qatar, which shares the world's largest natural gas field — the North Field — with Iran across a shared maritime border, has long advocated for diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran as a cornerstone of regional stability.
Doha has repeatedly offered its good offices as a channel of communication between the two adversaries. Qatari officials have stressed that any military escalation in the Gulf would have severe consequences for global energy markets and humanitarian corridors, including those serving besieged Gaza.
The IRGC Navy has historically used the Strait of Hormuz as both a strategic pressure point and a bargaining chip. In 2019, Iranian forces briefly seized a British-flagged oil tanker in the strait, and repeated interdictions of commercial vessels have punctuated each cycle of diplomatic breakdown since the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2018.
The latest round of indirect US-Iran talks, mediated by Oman, concluded last week without a framework agreement, with American and Iranian officials offering conflicting accounts of progress. US envoy Steve Witkoff met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Muscat, but sources familiar with the discussions said the two sides remain far apart on verification mechanisms and the pace of sanctions removal.
Regional analysts noted that the IRGC's statement was calibrated to signal Iran's resolve without closing the door entirely on negotiations. Gulf states, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, have urged both Washington and Tehran to exercise restraint, warning that a military confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz would destabilize global energy supplies at a moment of acute economic vulnerability worldwide.
