Iranian Strike on Saudi Arabia Damages Two U.S. E-3 Sentry AWACS Aircraft

Iran struck Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, damaging at least two U.S. Air Force E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control aircraft in an attack that marks a dramatic escalation in regional tensions, according to reports from multiple conflict-monitoring accounts.
Reports confirm that at least one of the aircraft was completely destroyed in the strike, while a second sustained significant damage. The E-3 Sentry, known by its NATO designation AWACS, is among the most strategically valuable airborne assets in the U.S. arsenal, providing long-range radar surveillance, battle management, and command-and-control capabilities across an entire theater of operations. Each aircraft carries a price tag exceeding $270 million and cannot be quickly replaced.
Prince Sultan Air Base, located approximately 80 kilometers southeast of Riyadh, serves as a critical hub for U.S. air operations in the Arabian Peninsula. The installation has hosted American military assets since Operation Desert Shield in 1991 and remains a cornerstone of U.S. force projection across the Gulf region.
The attack comes against a backdrop of sharply deteriorating relations between Washington and Tehran, and amid ongoing U.S. military operations against Iranian-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen. The United States has conducted repeated strikes on Houthi positions in recent weeks following the group's sustained campaign against commercial and military shipping in the Red Sea.
If confirmed, the strike would represent one of the most direct Iranian military actions against American assets in the region in decades, surpassing in audacity the January 2020 ballistic missile strike on Ain al-Asad base in Iraq that followed the killing of General Qassem Soleimani.
The incident threatens to draw Gulf Cooperation Council states deeper into a confrontation they have worked to avoid. Qatar, which hosts the forward headquarters of U.S. Central Command at Al Udeid Air Base — the largest American military installation in the Middle East — has pursued a policy of diplomatic engagement with Tehran while maintaining its security partnership with Washington. Doha's carefully calibrated posture now faces renewed pressure as the regional security architecture fractures.
Saudi Arabia and Iran restored diplomatic ties in March 2023 through a Chinese-brokered deal, making the reported strike an extraordinarily provocative act that threatens to unravel two years of cautious rapprochement between Riyadh and Tehran. Saudi officials have not yet issued a statement, and U.S. Central Command has not confirmed the incident at time of publication. Regional and international responses are being closely monitored.
