Israeli Army Destroys Solar Panels in Southern Lebanon Town
Israeli forces destroyed solar power installations in the southern Lebanese town of Debel on Saturday, in the latest escalation of military operations targeting civilian infrastructure across the country's southern border region. The destruction of the renewable energy panels comes as Lebanon continues to grapple with one of the most severe electricity crises in its modern history, with state-supplied power available for only a few hours each day in most areas.
According to reports circulated on the @clashreport monitoring channel, Israeli army units carried out the operation as part of ongoing ground activity in villages along the southern frontier. Solar panels have become a critical lifeline for residents of southern Lebanese towns, where families and small businesses have invested heavily in private renewable systems to compensate for the collapse of the national grid since the country's economic meltdown began in 2019.
The targeting of solar infrastructure follows a documented pattern of Israeli strikes on civilian utilities in southern Lebanon since hostilities intensified in October 2023. Lebanese officials and human rights organisations have repeatedly accused Israel of systematically dismantling the economic and humanitarian foundations of border communities, including agricultural land, water networks and now decentralised energy assets that residents had built independently of the state.
Debel, a predominantly Christian town in the Bint Jbeil district, lies within the zone covered by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which formally ended the 2006 war. The November 2024 ceasefire arrangement between Israel and Hezbollah was meant to halt offensive Israeli ground operations in Lebanese territory, but Lebanese authorities and UNIFIL have logged hundreds of alleged violations since the truce came into effect.
The destruction of renewable energy infrastructure carries particular weight for Lebanon, which generates a small fraction of its electricity from its dilapidated public utility, Electricite du Liban. International donors and Gulf states, including Qatar, have funded multiple humanitarian electricity initiatives in Lebanon over the past three years, with Doha previously pledging fuel grants and emergency support for Lebanese hospitals and public institutions.
Qatar has consistently positioned itself as a humanitarian and diplomatic backer of Lebanon, providing food assistance, salaries for army personnel, and reconstruction support after past conflicts. Qatari officials have repeatedly called for full implementation of Resolution 1701 and an end to attacks on Lebanese civilians and civilian infrastructure. The latest reported destruction in Debel is likely to add further pressure on the international community to enforce the terms of the ceasefire and to protect the fragile recovery efforts underway in Lebanon's battered south.
