Qatar air defence intercepts fresh Iranian missile barrage over Doha

Qatar's air defences intercepted two waves of Iranian ballistic missiles fired toward Doha early on Friday, July 17, with authorities saying every incoming projectile was brought down and that only a single child was hurt by falling shrapnel. According to accounts from journalists in the city, the first salvo came at about 3:30 a.m. local time and a second at 5:45 a.m., both directed at the US-operated Al Udeid Air Base southwest of the capital. The wounded child received medical treatment, and no deaths were reported. The barrage landed while Qatar was observing four days of national mourning for the former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was in Doha to offer condolences. It followed the collapse of a US–Iran ceasefire and formed part of a wider Iranian assault that also targeted Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan. Doha has faced this before. In June 2025, Iran fired missiles at Al Udeid — the largest US military installation in the Middle East — in retaliation for American strikes on its nuclear facilities; Qatari air defences intercepted that barrage as well, and Doha briefly closed its airspace. Al Udeid hosts the forward headquarters of US Central Command and thousands of American personnel, making it a recurring target whenever confrontation between Washington and Tehran sharpens. Qatar, which keeps working relations with Iran and shares the world's largest gas field with it, has repeatedly warned that the base on its soil becomes a liability during such flare-ups and has pressed both sides toward de-escalation. Officials had not, at the time of reporting, said whether Doha would suspend flights at Hamad International Airport or issue a formal response to Tehran.
