Russia and Qatar discuss Hormuz Strait security concerns

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reviewed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz with his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, during a meeting held on the sidelines of diplomatic engagements in Cairo, according to a report from Anadolu Agency. The talks come amid heightened concerns over maritime security in one of the world's most critical energy chokepoints, through which roughly a fifth of global oil shipments transit daily.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway separating Iran from the Arabian Peninsula, has long been a focal point of geopolitical tension. Qatar has emerged in recent years as one of the most active diplomatic actors in the Gulf, leveraging its relationships across rival camps to facilitate dialogue. Sheikh Mohammed, who also serves as Prime Minister, has played a central role in mediation efforts ranging from the Gaza ceasefire negotiations to broader regional security files. Qatari officials have repeatedly stressed that stability in Hormuz is non-negotiable, given that any disruption would reverberate across global energy markets and directly threaten the emirate's LNG exports to Asia and Europe.

The Russian-Qatari consultations also reflect the deepening political coordination between Doha and Moscow on regional files. The two capitals have engaged in sustained dialogue on Syria, the Gaza war, and broader Middle East security architecture. Russia, a major energy producer in its own right, shares with Qatar a vested interest in the orderly functioning of global hydrocarbon trade.
