Building Collapses in Gaza City Universities Area After Israeli Strikes, Trapping Displaced Persons

A residential building already weakened by Israeli airstrikes has collapsed in the university district of Gaza City, trapping an unknown number of displaced people who had been sheltering inside, according to reports from Palestinian Telegram channels covering the area. The structure, located near the cluster of higher-education campuses in the city, had reportedly sustained direct or nearby damage from the ongoing Israeli bombardment before its final collapse, a pattern that has repeatedly struck Gaza City through nearly two years of war. Displaced families frequently take refuge in partially damaged buildings, schools and university facilities after fleeing homes destroyed elsewhere or under active bombardment, since dedicated shelter capacity in the city has long been exhausted. Gaza's civil defense teams have repeatedly warned they lack the heavy equipment, fuel and manpower needed to safely clear rubble and reach survivors trapped under collapsed structures, a shortage worsened by restrictions on the entry of machinery and spare parts into the Strip. The university district itself has been among the areas most heavily damaged during the war, with several campuses reduced to ruins by strikes and demolitions earlier in the conflict. Qatar has served as a lead mediator, alongside Egypt and the United States, in ceasefire and hostage-release negotiations between Israel and Hamas, and Doha has repeatedly called for an immediate halt to strikes on populated areas and unimpeded entry of heavy rescue equipment and humanitarian aid into Gaza.
