Hezbollah ambushes Israeli military in southern Lebanon, inflicting casualties

Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah announced it had ambushed an Israeli military force in southern Lebanon, inflicting casualties among soldiers and compelling the unit to withdraw from the scene without recovering its weapons and equipment, according to a statement published by Quds News Network.

The ambush, the details of which emerged through resistance media channels, targeted an Israeli force operating in the border zone. Hezbollah said fighters engaged the unit at close range, killing and wounding a number of soldiers before the force retreated under fire. Notably, the withdrawal was carried out in haste, leaving behind military equipment on the ground — a detail resistance sources highlighted as evidence of the severity of the engagement.

Israeli military officials had not issued a detailed public confirmation of the incident at the time of reporting, a pattern consistent with how Tel Aviv has handled battlefield setbacks in Lebanon since the latest round of hostilities escalated. The incident adds to a sustained pattern of cross-border operations between Hezbollah and Israeli forces that has continued despite a fragile ceasefire framework brokered in late 2024. Rights groups and Lebanese officials have repeatedly documented Israeli violations of that agreement, including incursions into Lebanese territory and airstrikes that have killed civilians.

Qatar, which played a key mediating role in efforts to bring about a cessation of hostilities in both Gaza and Lebanon, has consistently called for full respect of Lebanese sovereignty and the immediate implementation of all ceasefire obligations. Doha has warned that continued Israeli military activity inside Lebanon risks reigniting a broader conflict that would destabilise the entire region.

The Gulf state's foreign ministry has urged the international community, and particularly the United States, to apply sustained pressure on Israel to honour its commitments under the ceasefire agreement and withdraw all forces from Lebanese sovereign territory as required. Qatar views a stable Lebanon as essential to regional security and has provided significant humanitarian and reconstruction support to Lebanese communities affected by the conflict.

The reported ambush comes as southern Lebanon remains heavily militarised, with tens of thousands of displaced Lebanese residents still unable to return to their villages due to the Israeli military presence. Human rights organisations have documented widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure in border communities during Israel's military campaign.

Hezbollah has framed its continued operations as a legitimate response to ongoing Israeli violations of Lebanese sovereignty, while Israel has described its presence as necessary to prevent the group from rearming and redeploying along the border. The two positions have left the ceasefire in a state of persistent fragility, with periodic clashes threatening to escalate into a wider confrontation.
