Houthi military operations in the Red Sea are intensifying pressure on Egypt's maritime economy and regional standing as the Iranian-backed militant group escalates attacks on international shipping. Since 2023, the Houthis have conducted repeated strikes on commercial vessels and military targets in one of the world's most critical shipping corridors, forcing vessel rerouting that bypasses Egypt's Suez Canal—a vital revenue source generating approximately $6-7 billion annually for Cairo's stretched economy.

The Red Sea's Strait of Bab al-Mandab, which lies largely within Yemeni territorial waters, has become increasingly contested. Houthi drone and missile attacks have prompted international shipping companies to divert vessels around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope, extending transit times by weeks and adding significant costs to global trade. This diversion directly threatens Egypt's Suez Canal toll revenues, which have already declined sharply due to the reduced shipping volume passing through Egyptian waters.

Egypt's economic vulnerability compounds the security challenge. With foreign reserves declining and debt servicing pressures mounting, Cairo depends heavily on Suez revenues and tourism. The Houthi campaign—framed by the group as solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza—has created a regional spillover effect that undermines Egypt's ability to manage its already-strained finances. The government has deployed additional naval assets to secure the corridor but faces limitations in controlling waters beyond its direct jurisdiction.

The escalation reflects broader regional tensions tied to the Gaza conflict. While Houthis target ships they identify with Israel-linked entities or Western interests, the indiscriminate nature of attacks and blockade effects harm all nations dependent on Red Sea commerce, including Qatar and other Gulf states whose energy exports and trade rely on the route.
