Iran Announces Major Gas Discovery in Fars Province Amid Post-War Energy Push

Iran's Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad announced on state television Sunday the discovery of a major new natural gas field in the south of Fars province, saying the find holds more than 7.5 trillion cubic feet of gas in place, with roughly 5.7 trillion cubic feet recoverable — a volume he said is equivalent to about 15 years of production from one phase of the South Pars field. Some regional accounts have referenced a separate field named "Pazan," also in Fars province, with different reserve figures — Qatar Standard has not been able to independently verify whether this refers to the same discovery or a distinct find, and treats that figure as unconfirmed pending an official Iranian Oil Ministry statement.

Iran shares the world's largest gas field — known as South Pars on the Iranian side and the North Field on Qatar's — making it one of the few countries whose upstream gas potential rivals Qatar's.
