Iran Deputy Economy Minister Says Latest US Sanctions Campaign Failed

Iran's deputy economy minister said the latest US campaign targeting Iran's economy and trade has failed, according to a report by Iran's Mehr news agency. The official argued that Iran's diversified economy and its established trade networks have once again defeated Washington's predictions that the country's economy would collapse.
The remarks reflect a long-running Iranian argument that American pressure has not produced the outcomes its architects promised. Tehran's officials have said for years that decades of US forecasts of Iranian economic collapse have repeatedly proven unfounded, and the deputy minister's statement repeats that position in response to the newest round of measures.
The statement comes from an Iranian government official and describes Tehran's own assessment of the sanctions. It is not an independent economic evaluation, and the report gives no figures that would allow the claim to be checked against trade or growth data.
US sanctions on Iran have been in place in various forms for decades. Washington withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018 and reimposed measures aimed at Iranian oil exports, banking and shipping. Iranian officials have since said the country has adapted by widening its trading partners and relying on domestic production.
For Qatar and the Gulf, the issue has a practical dimension. Qatar shares the world's largest natural gas field with Iran, known as the North Field on the Qatari side and South Pars on the Iranian side. Doha has kept diplomatic channels open with Tehran and has generally called for dialogue rather than confrontation in the region.
