Qatar PM meets foreign ministers of Egypt, Sweden, Germany

Qatar's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, met separately with the foreign ministers of Egypt, Sweden and Germany in New York on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Sheikh Mohammed held talks with HE Dr Badr Abdelatty, Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates; HE Maria Malmer Stenergard, Sweden's Minister for Foreign Affairs; and HE Johann Wadephul, Germany's Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs. According to the Qatar Tribune, the meetings reviewed bilateral cooperation and ways to develop it, along with the latest regional developments. The talks also covered "diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and enhance security and stability in the region, in addition to several issues of joint interest."

The meeting with Abdelatty brings together the two countries that have worked alongside the United States as mediators between Israel and Hamas over the war in Gaza. Doha and Cairo were central to the negotiations that produced the Gaza ceasefire agreement signed at Sharm el-Sheikh in October 2025, and the two capitals have remained in close contact on its implementation and on humanitarian access to the Strip.

The talks with Stenergard and Wadephul extend Qatar's engagement with European capitals. Germany is one of the European Union's largest economies and a key partner for Doha in energy, trade and investment, while Sweden has been an active voice within the EU on humanitarian issues in the Middle East.

The annual high-level week of the UN General Assembly gathers heads of state, heads of government and foreign ministers in New York, making it one of the busiest periods of the diplomatic calendar. Sheikh Mohammed, who has served as foreign minister since 2016 and as prime minister since March 2023, typically holds a series of bilateral meetings during the session as Qatar pursues its mediation role on regional conflicts.
