Iranian Parliament Speaker Says Americans Imposed Maritime Blockade

Iran's parliament speaker declared Saturday that the United States has imposed a naval blockade on the Islamic Republic, denouncing the move as a decision rooted in ignorance that would ultimately backfire on Washington. The statement, delivered by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, marked one of Tehran's sharpest public reactions to escalating American military pressure in the region.
Ghalibaf, speaking to reporters, said the announcement of a maritime blockade represented a fundamental misunderstanding of Iran's resolve and its capacity to withstand external pressure. He did not specify the precise scope of the reported blockade but framed it as an act of aggression that violated international maritime law and norms governing freedom of navigation.
The remarks come amid a period of acute tension between Washington and Tehran, with American naval assets maintaining a significant presence in the Persian Gulf and the broader Arabian Sea. The United States has in recent weeks intensified pressure on Iran through a combination of diplomatic warnings and visible military deployments, part of an effort to constrain Iranian oil exports and limit what Washington describes as destabilizing activities across the region.
For Gulf states, including Qatar, the standoff carries considerable strategic weight. The Persian Gulf remains one of the world's most critical waterways, through which a substantial portion of global energy exports — including Qatari liquefied natural gas — transits each year. Any disruption to maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz or surrounding waters would carry immediate and severe consequences for energy markets and regional economies.
Qatar, which hosts the largest American military base in the Middle East at Al Udeid, has historically pursued a policy of dialogue and de-escalation with Tehran, maintaining diplomatic and commercial ties even as other Gulf states have at times adopted more confrontational postures. Doha has consistently advocated for negotiations over confrontation in managing the Iran nuclear file and broader regional security questions.
Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that any attempt to enforce a naval blockade would be met with a forceful response, and Tehran has previously threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz in the event of an existential military threat. Analysts note that such a closure, even temporarily, would send energy prices surging and trigger a global economic shock.
The parliament speaker's statement signals that Iran intends to use strong rhetorical pressure to deter further American escalation. Whether the two sides can step back from the current confrontation through diplomacy remains uncertain, with back-channel communications between Washington and Tehran continuing even as both governments exchange pointed public warnings.
