Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy: Hormuz Situation to Remain Unchanged

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy warned on Saturday that the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz will remain unchanged as long as vessels travelling to and from Iranian ports face threats, a statement that raised fresh concerns among Gulf energy exporters who depend on the critical waterway for the bulk of their oil and gas shipments.
The naval command of the IRGC issued the warning without specifying which country or entity it held responsible for the alleged threats, though the declaration came amid sustained tensions between Tehran and Washington over renewed American sanctions pressure and unresolved negotiations surrounding Iran's nuclear programme. Senior Iranian military officials have in recent months repeatedly signalled their readiness to restrict navigation through the strait should they deem Iranian interests to be under attack.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage separating the Iranian coast from the Musandam Peninsula of Oman, is the single most important chokepoint in global energy trade. Roughly a fifth of all oil traded worldwide and a significant share of liquefied natural gas passes through the strait daily. Qatar, the world's leading LNG exporter, channels virtually its entire production through Hormuz, making any disruption to freedom of navigation a matter of acute economic and strategic concern for Doha.
Qatar has historically maintained open diplomatic channels with Tehran, a relationship that proved vital during the 2017 Gulf blockade when Iran opened its airspace and allowed Qatari-flagged vessels to use its ports. That pragmatic engagement has allowed Doha to serve at times as an informal interlocutor between Western capitals and the Iranian government, most recently in discussions related to American hostages and nuclear confidence-building measures.
Gulf Cooperation Council member states export an estimated 17 million barrels of crude oil per day through Hormuz, and any sustained disruption would send immediate shockwaves through global energy markets. Brent crude futures have already registered elevated volatility in recent weeks against a backdrop of uncertainty surrounding Iran-United States diplomacy.
The IRGC Navy has previously seized commercial vessels in the strait and detained crews in incidents it framed as responses to sanctions enforcement or maritime violations. International shipping insurers have kept war-risk premiums for Gulf voyages elevated since a series of tanker incidents in 2019 that Western governments attributed to Iranian forces.
Diplomats in the region said the statement appeared calibrated as a deterrent rather than a precursor to immediate action, but they cautioned that the volatile nature of current nuclear talks meant the security calculus in the Gulf could shift rapidly. Qatar's foreign ministry had not issued a formal response at the time of publication.
