Israeli Shelling Kills One, Injures Another in Gaza's Al-Bureij Camp
Israeli forces shelled the Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza on Monday, killing one Palestinian and wounding another in the latest strike on the densely populated enclave, according to Al Jazeera's live correspondent on the ground.
The attack targeted the camp, one of the largest refugee concentrations in the central Gaza Strip, adding to a mounting civilian death toll as Israeli military operations continue across the territory despite international pressure for a permanent ceasefire.
Al-Bureij, home to tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians, has been repeatedly struck throughout the current conflict, which entered its nineteenth month following the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023. The camp was established in the 1950s to house Palestinian refugees displaced during the 1948 Nakba and has since grown into one of the most densely populated areas in the world.
The strike comes as Qatar continues its intensive diplomatic efforts to broker a lasting ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Doha, alongside Egypt and the United States, has served as a primary mediator in negotiations, with Qatari officials shuttling between delegations in an effort to secure a deal that would halt the fighting and allow the release of hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has repeatedly condemned Israeli strikes on civilian infrastructure and refugee populations, calling on the international community to compel Israel to comply with international humanitarian law. Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has urged all parties to prioritize civilian protection and reach a durable political resolution.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, UNRWA, has warned that conditions in Gaza are catastrophic, with the civilian population facing acute shortages of food, medicine, and shelter following the near-total destruction of the territory's infrastructure. The agency estimates that over 90 percent of Gaza's population has been displaced at least once since the start of hostilities.
Gulf states including Qatar, Kuwait, and the UAE have collectively channeled hundreds of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid to Gaza since the outbreak of the conflict, though aid organizations say delivery remains severely constrained by Israeli restrictions on border crossings.
Monday's shelling in Al-Bureij follows a pattern of strikes in central and southern Gaza over recent days, with Palestinian health authorities reporting dozens of casualties across the Strip. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 51,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023, the majority of them women and children, figures that the United Nations has described as credible.
