Qatar reportedly turns to US natural gas as Iran war disrupts LNG exports

Qatar has reportedly agreed to buy U.S. natural gas, according to a CNBC report that says the war involving Iran has redrawn the global gas market. The report's framing suggests that the world's biggest LNG exporters are now sourcing supply from competitors, a reversal of the usual flow. The volumes, price, duration and counterparties of the reported deal have not been confirmed in the material available to Qatar Standard, and Qatari officials have not been quoted.
The reported purchase matters because of how Qatar ships its gas. Qatar produces about 77 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas a year, mostly from the North Field and processed at Ras Laffan Industrial City, and its cargoes leave the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. Any conflict involving Iran that disrupts shipping, insurance or loading schedules in that corridor can constrain Qatari exports, and long-term buyers in Asia and Europe still need to be supplied.
Buying gas from another source would be one way for a portfolio seller to keep delivering to customers when its own cargoes are delayed or at risk. QatarEnergy already has a presence in U.S. LNG, holding a 70 percent stake in the Golden Pass export project in Texas alongside ExxonMobil, which holds 30 percent. Whether the reported purchase relates to that project has not been established.
For Qatar, LNG is the backbone of state revenue and finances the expansion of the North Field, which is intended to lift national capacity toward 142 million tonnes a year by the end of the decade. Residents and businesses are exposed to the outcome because government spending, the wider economy and employment are tied to the health of gas exports. Qatar Standard will update this report when QatarEnergy or the government confirms the terms.
