QRCS and OCHA Commemorate World Humanitarian Day at UN House Doha

Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) marked World Humanitarian Day on Wednesday, August 19, with a solidarity stand at UN House in Doha, launching the #ActForHumanity campaign to press for the protection of aid workers and civilians caught in conflict zones.
Abdullah Sultan Al Qattan, QRCS's Acting Secretary-General, addressed the gathering, which brought together officials from several UN agencies operating in Qatar alongside Qatari governmental bodies and nongovernmental organizations. "We reiterate our utter condemnation of all forms of attack and/or restriction against aid providers," he said, calling on the international community to uphold international humanitarian law and ensure unobstructed access for relief operations. He added: "In the admirably noble spirit of humanitarianism shown by all participants in this solidarity stand, we reaffirm our commitment to pursuing the path of humanity."
The gathering coincided with the opening of a public photo exhibition at UN House, running from August 19 to 22, documenting humanitarian responses to crises around the world. The exhibition is accompanied by infographics illustrating the toll armed conflict takes on civilians and humanitarian personnel, a toll that has climbed sharply in recent years as aid workers have come under fire in Gaza, Sudan and other war zones.
World Humanitarian Day is observed annually on August 19 to commemorate the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad, which killed 22 people, including the UN's top envoy to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. The date has since become an occasion for humanitarian organizations worldwide to renew calls for the safety of relief workers.
QRCS has long positioned itself as one of the Gulf's most active humanitarian actors, running relief and development operations across Gaza, Sudan, Yemen and Syria, among other crisis zones. Doha's hosting of the joint event with OCHA underscores Qatar's continued role as a base for UN humanitarian coordination in the region, reinforcing the country's broader diplomatic emphasis on civilian protection and unimpeded aid access in conflict zones such as Gaza.
