Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan Meets Russian Counterpart Sergey Lavrov
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum on Saturday, as the annual Turkish diplomatic gathering emerged as a critical venue for high-stakes regional negotiations amid ongoing conflicts across the Middle East and beyond.
The bilateral meeting between Fidan and Lavrov came as the Antalya forum brought together senior officials from Turkey, Russia, and Iran in what analysts described as an effort to maintain open diplomatic channels despite deep divisions over the war in Ukraine and shifting dynamics in the wider region.
Iranian officials attending the forum used the platform to voice sharp criticism of what they characterised as contradictory statements from Washington, signalling mounting frustration in Tehran over the pace and sincerity of ongoing nuclear diplomacy with the United States. The remarks added a pointed edge to what had been billed as a constructive multilateral dialogue.
The Antalya Diplomacy Forum, now in its fifth edition, has established itself as one of Ankara's flagship tools for projecting Turkey's role as an indispensable mediator between East and West. Hosted on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, the forum regularly draws foreign ministers, heads of state, and senior officials from across Europe, Asia, and the Gulf.
For Qatar and the broader Gulf Cooperation Council states, the trilateral diplomatic engagement carries direct significance. Doha has maintained parallel channels with both Moscow and Tehran throughout the Ukraine conflict, using its position as a neutral broker and host of American military infrastructure to press for de-escalation. Qatar's own diplomatic doctrine — built on dialogue without preconditions — closely mirrors the framework Ankara has pursued through the Antalya forum.
Saturday's talks between Fidan and Lavrov touched on the situation in Syria, where Turkish and Russian interests remain in delicate tension following the collapse of the Assad government, as well as the broader trajectory of the Ukraine peace process, for which Ankara has repeatedly offered to serve as a host and facilitator.
The involvement of Iranian officials underscored the complexity of the diplomatic landscape. Tehran's criticism of contradictory American positions appeared directed at recent statements from Washington regarding both the nuclear file and regional security arrangements, reflecting a pattern of public signalling Iran has deployed in multilateral settings to pressure Western interlocutors.
Diplomats present at the forum indicated that the margins of the event were as active as the formal sessions, with a dense schedule of bilateral meetings running alongside the main plenary discussions. The convergence of Turkish, Russian, and Iranian foreign policy heavyweights in Antalya reinforced the city's growing status as a back-channel hub where conversations that cannot easily happen in New York or Geneva take place instead.
