Zidane Iqbal says he was racially abused by Kuwaiti fans

Zidane Iqbal, the Manchester-born midfielder who plays for the Iraq national team, says he was racially abused by Kuwaiti fans. The claim was made by the player himself, and the material available at the time of writing does not include a full account of where and when the abuse took place, the exact words used, or any response from Kuwaiti football authorities, so those details are not reported here.
Iqbal came through the Manchester United academy and chose to represent Iraq at international level. His father is of Pakistani heritage and his mother is Iraqi, which makes him one of several European-raised players of Middle Eastern or South Asian background in the Iraqi squad. That background is part of why the allegation has drawn attention among supporters in the region.
The allegation matters in the Gulf because large numbers of South Asian and other migrant residents attend football matches across the region, including in Qatar, Kuwait and neighbouring states. Reports of racist abuse at a Gulf stadium raise questions for those fans about their safety and treatment as spectators, as well as for players of colour or mixed heritage who compete in the area.
FIFA's disciplinary code treats discriminatory behaviour by supporters as an offence for which the responsible association can be sanctioned. Whether any complaint has been lodged or any investigation opened over Iqbal's allegation has not been confirmed. Qatar Standard will update this report if Iqbal, the Iraq Football Association, the Kuwait Football Association or the Asian Football Confederation issue a statement.
