Al Khulaifi, Syrian FM discuss bilateral cooperation and latest regional developments

Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, held a phone call with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani to discuss bilateral cooperation and the latest developments across the region. The two officials reviewed the strong ties between Doha and Damascus and explored ways to deepen cooperation across political, economic and humanitarian fields, along with issues of mutual concern.
Al-Khulaifi reaffirmed Qatar's continued support for Syria's sovereignty, territorial unity and the aspirations of the Syrian people for stability, security and prosperity, following years of civil war and the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's government in December 2024.
The call comes amid a broader rapprochement between Doha and Damascus since the fall of the Assad regime. Qatar was among the first Gulf states to re-establish full diplomatic relations with Syria's transitional authorities, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, reopening its embassy in Damascus in early 2025 after more than a decade of suspended ties. Qatari officials, including Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, have made multiple visits to Damascus to coordinate on reconstruction, humanitarian relief and the restoration of basic services.
Doha has also moved to ease Syria's energy crisis, arranging natural gas shipments routed through Jordan to help restore electricity supply to millions of Syrians, and has pledged support for rebuilding infrastructure devastated by nearly 14 years of conflict.
Regionally, Qatar has pressed for the lifting of Western sanctions on Syria and for its full reintegration into the Arab League, arguing that a stable, unified Syria free of foreign interference serves the wider security of the Levant and the Gulf. The call reflected that continuity, with both sides agreeing to maintain close consultation on regional developments affecting their shared interests.
