NBC Reports 12 Ships Passed Through Strait of Hormuz in 24 Hours

Only 12 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz in the last 24 hours, NBC News reported Tuesday, a figure that represents a dramatic drop from the waterway's typical daily traffic and signals deepening disruption to one of the world's most strategically vital maritime chokepoints.
The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow passage between Iran and the Oman peninsula, is the single most important oil transit corridor on earth. Under normal conditions, between 15 and 20 tankers carrying crude oil and petroleum products pass through the strait daily, along with liquefied natural gas carriers and commercial vessels. The reported figure of just 12 ships in a 24-hour window suggests a significant contraction in maritime activity that will be closely monitored by energy markets and regional governments alike.
The report comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, with Iran and the United States engaged in ongoing nuclear negotiations while Tehran has repeatedly signaled its willingness to use the strait as leverage in any escalation. Iranian officials have on multiple occasions threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz in response to military pressure or crippling sanctions, a threat that has historically sent oil prices surging.
For Qatar, the implications are acute. The country is the world's leading exporter of liquefied natural gas, and the vast majority of its LNG shipments bound for Europe, Asia, and beyond transit the Strait of Hormuz before entering the Arabian Sea. Any sustained interruption to traffic through the strait would directly affect Qatar's ability to fulfil its long-term supply contracts and would undermine the energy security of dozens of importing nations.
Gulf Cooperation Council member states, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait, are similarly exposed. Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in the East-West pipeline as an alternative crude export route to the Red Sea, but its capacity is insufficient to absorb the full volume of Gulf oil exports in the event of a full closure.
Shipping insurers and commodity traders have been watching the strait closely in recent weeks as maritime risk premiums in the region have climbed. A sustained reduction in vessel traffic through Hormuz, whether driven by insurance concerns, flag-state advisories, or direct threats, would tighten global energy supplies and add upward pressure to oil and gas prices at a moment when markets are already sensitive to supply disruptions.
Neither Iranian authorities nor the United States Fifth Fleet, which is headquartered in Bahrain and monitors the Gulf waterways, had issued formal statements at the time of reporting. Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs had not yet commented on the NBC report.
