Qatar Airways Deploys Pilots to Rwanda in Regional Aviation Initiative

Qatar Airways is sending a group of its pilots to Rwanda, offering more than a dozen A330-trained crew members voluntary short-term secondments with RwandAir, the East African nation's national carrier. The airline confirmed the move in a statement, saying: "A group of Qatar Airways A330 pilots are being offered a voluntary short-term secondment opportunity with RwandAir." The duration of the deployments was not disclosed.

The secondments follow Qatar Airways' decision to retire its remaining Airbus A330 passenger aircraft from its fleet, giving A330-trained pilots the chance to continue flying while supporting RwandAir operations, the airline said.

The move comes as the Iran war continues to disrupt Gulf aviation and drive up costs. Jet fuel prices have roughly doubled since the conflict began, Gulf carriers face airspace restrictions and rerouting, and older aircraft such as the A330 are especially exposed because they are less fuel-efficient than newer-generation jets. A spokesperson said fleet reviews and replacing older aircraft with newer, more efficient models is "part of the airline's normal operations."

There is history behind the A330s bound for Kigali: Qatar Airways leased four A330s from Oman Air last year, planning to operate them through 2026, but the aircraft never entered service with the airline. RwandAir acquired one of them earlier this year, and two further A330s parked in Doha, leased from lessor Jetran, are expected to be returned to the lessor in October.

The deployment fits a broader fleet renewal: 138 new aircraft are expected over the next five years, with 410 aircraft on order from Airbus and Boeing. Between September 2026 and the end of 2027, the carrier plans six aircraft exits and 19 new deliveries.

Qatar Airways and RwandAir have a long-standing partnership including codeshare arrangements connecting Qatar's international network with destinations across Africa. The airline posted its strongest financial results in its history in 2024-25, with net profit of $2.1 billion.
