Qatar Energy Minister warns of LNG expansion project delays

Qatar's Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, who also serves as President and CEO of QatarEnergy, has warned that the country's liquefied natural gas expansion projects could face delays, pointing to ongoing implementation challenges and mounting timeline pressures. The warning covers the North Field expansion program, the world's largest LNG development, which is being carried out in two main phases: North Field East (NFE) and North Field South (NFS). The combined project is designed to lift Qatar's LNG production capacity from 77 million tonnes per year to 126 million tonnes per year, a target originally set for completion by 2027. Al-Kaabi's comments reflect the scale of the engineering and logistical undertaking involved, which includes new liquefaction trains, associated onshore facilities at Ras Laffan, offshore drilling campaigns in the North Field, and a dedicated fleet of new LNG carriers being built by shipyards in South Korea and China. Any slippage in the schedule would be significant for global gas markets, given that Qatar and the United States are competing to be the top supplier of LNG this decade, and buyers across Asia and Europe have signed long-term contracts tied to the expanded volumes. QatarEnergy has previously stressed that Qatar aims to maintain its position as a reliable, low-cost supplier even as it undertakes the expansion, and the ministry's acknowledgment of delay risk suggests project partners, including international majors involved in the North Field joint ventures, may need to revisit delivery timelines in the coming months.
