Rocket Barrage from Lebanon Damages Buildings in Northern Israel
A barrage of approximately 10 rockets was fired from southern Lebanon toward the northern Israeli town of Metula on Friday, causing damage to at least two buildings and triggering air raid sirens across the Galilee region, according to Israeli military and emergency services.
The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed that several of the projectiles were intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system, while others fell in open areas near the border town. Shrapnel from the intercepted rockets struck residential buildings in Metula, causing structural damage but no immediate reports of casualties. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene to assess the extent of the damage and ensure the safety of residents.
Sirens sounded across multiple communities in the Upper Galilee, sending residents rushing to bomb shelters. The attack marks a notable escalation along the volatile Israel-Lebanon border, which has seen sporadic exchanges of fire in recent months despite ongoing international diplomatic efforts to maintain calm.
The Lebanese armed group Hezbollah has not immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Israel has frequently attributed cross-border rocket fire to Palestinian factions operating in southern Lebanon, though Hezbollah maintains dominant military control over the border region.
The incident comes at a particularly sensitive time for the region, as diplomatic channels remain active in attempts to prevent a broader conflagration along Israel's northern frontier. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, which patrols the border area under Security Council Resolution 1701, has called repeatedly for restraint from all parties.
Qatar, which has played a prominent mediating role in regional conflicts, has consistently called for de-escalation along all fronts and warned against actions that could widen the scope of hostilities in the Middle East. Doha has emphasized through its diplomatic engagements that civilian populations on all sides must be protected in accordance with international humanitarian law.
The Israeli military said it was conducting a thorough assessment of the launches and reserved the right to respond. In past incidents, Israel has struck what it described as launch sites and military infrastructure in southern Lebanon in retaliation for cross-border fire.
Residents of northern Israeli border communities have grown increasingly vocal in their demands for a lasting security arrangement, with many having been displaced from their homes for extended periods due to the persistent threat of rocket fire. Local authorities in the Galilee called on the government to pursue both military and diplomatic solutions to restore normalcy to the region.
The latest exchange underscores the fragility of the security situation along the Israel-Lebanon border and the potential for rapid escalation in an already volatile regional environment.
