Asked by a reporter whether the two could go to war, Trump said: "He's a very good friend of mine. We've worked very well together. I like him a lot." He added: "He's a hell of a leader and a strong person. I don't think that will happen with Turkey — not as long as I'm president, because he respects me and I respect him."

The warmth is striking given the tone Erdogan strikes at home. To Turkish and wider Muslim-world audiences, the Turkish president has been among the fiercest critics of Israel's war on Gaza, has championed the Palestinian cause, and has let ministers float maximalist claims — Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci recently invoked Ottoman sovereignty over Jerusalem, saying "those lands will come under our sovereignty and dominion once more." Yet the public heat sits awkwardly beside the private channel Trump described: a relationship of mutual respect, NATO coordination, and quiet deal-making.

That gap — between the megaphone and the back channel — is increasingly the defining feature of Erdogan's regional posture. For all the anti-Western rhetoric aimed at his base, Ankara remains anchored in NATO, is preparing to host a summit of the alliance in July, and has kept its lines to Washington open where rivals cannot. Analysts have read Trump's personal investment in Erdogan as a genuine restraining factor on escalation, one Ankara is happy to bank even as it amplifies its public stance.

The same pragmatism shapes Turkey's approach to Iran, where Erdogan's interests quietly diverge from the "resistance" framing he projects publicly. Reports indicate Erdogan urged Trump to drop any plan to use Kurdish militias on Iraq's border in operations against Tehran — not out of solidarity with Iran, but because a US-Israeli confrontation could empower Iranian Kurds and unravel his domestic settlement with the PKK. During the spring's regional flare-up Turkey took care to avoid becoming a Tehran target, absorbed comparatively little damage, and positioned itself as a competitor to Iran for leadership of the Muslim world rather than a partner in its axis.

The regional realignment also runs through Doha. Amid reports that Hamas's political leadership could relocate during negotiations, Turkey has emerged as a presumed alternative host, deepening Ankara's weight — while Qatar remains the central mediator in Gaza diplomacy alongside Egyptian and Omani channels. Turkey, analysts expect, will stay militarily on the sidelines while pressing its diplomatic influence, backing Qatari, Omani and Pakistani mediation. For now, Trump's message is simpler: friends, he insists, do not go to war.
